Before any batt goes in
Downlights: what has to change before insulation can go over them.
Insulation over a hot light is a fire risk. The program requires every downlight in the ceiling to be IC or IC-4 rated before the rebate applies. Here is what that means and what it costs.
The three types
Halogen, LED, IC-4.
Halogen: insulation must stop short
clearance, no cover
IC-4: insulation can go straight over
IC-4 rated
Halogen
Runs hot, often above 200 °C at the fitting. Insulation can never be laid over or around it. Must be replaced before the rebate applies.
LED, not IC rated
Runs cool, but the fitting is not tested for contact with insulation. Needs a clearance or a cover, which the installer checks on the day.
IC-4 rated
Tested so insulation can be laid directly over and around it. The target for every downlight in a VEU ceiling. Most new LED fittings are IC-4.
The electrician's check
Who checks, and when.
A licensed electrician from a Registered Electrical Contractor visits before the install. The check is done no earlier than 30 days before the works. You and the installer get the report at least 24 hours before anyone enters the roof.
- 01The electrician inspects the wiring and every downlight in the ceiling.
- 02Halogens and other non-rated fittings are listed for replacement with IC-4 fittings.
- 03Replacement happens before install day. You see the fixed price first.
- 04On the day, the installer checks again and photographs each fitting before the batts go in.
The price
$90 per fitting including GST.

Both prices are shown on your written quote before any work starts. If you would rather use your own electrician, the fittings must be IC-4 rated and the report must reach us at least 24 hours before install.
